DAY 2: JAKARTA – PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI – TANJUNG HARAPAN ▼

Luggage ready, today is the day to get to know one of the most important centers of biodiversity in the world and the third largest island on the planet. Borneo!!! After breakfast and at the right time you will have the transfer to the airport to take the direct flight to Pangkalan Bun, on the island of Borneo, or better known by Indonesians as Kalimantan. Upon arrival at the airport your guide will be waiting for you to transfer you to the port of Kumai about 15-20 minutes by car where we will embark on a great adventure! The time of entry to the Boat will be at 11am or earlier if the boat is already available.

If your flight arrives early (before 12.00) we can arrive on time at the rehabilitation center of Tanjung Harapan where at 3 pm, the Rangers of the National Park feed the Orangutans and you can have the first close encounters with them. Tanjung Harapan’s translation is Cape of Hope. This first camp is one of those that has more wetlands and being in the afternoon has more mosquitoes so make sure you get enough mosquito repellent. After visiting this Ranger Camp, you will continue upstream, resting on the boat, while we look for animals in the vicinity of the Sekonyer River.z This afternoon it is very common to see groups of proboscis monkeys and macaques in the treetops, jumping from one branch to another, or even to see monitor lizards or crocodiles in the shallow waters of the sides of the river. Get ready for the sunset and enjoy the exquisite food prepared by our jungle crew. The boat moors on the side of the river for the night.

Tonight we can take a walk through the jungle to look for nocturnal animals such as snakes, tarantulas or even if we are lucky, we can see luminescent mushrooms or tarsier monkeys.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Accommodation: Ship Klotok

DAY 3:PONDOK TANGGUY & CAMP LEAKEY ▼

Today you will wake up to the sounds and colors of the jungle. With total security, you will never forget how you woke up in the river surrounded by this overflowing nature. After an extraordinary breakfast on board, we will go in time to see the Tanggui camp at the time of animal feeding (9am) Little by little you will see how the branches of the treetops begin to move and then you will see the silhouettes of the Orangutans arriving little by little to the feeding platform. Tanggui was a camp of release of Young Orangutans that were rehabilitated, and continue to add food every day, to prevent the Orangutans from moving away for lack of food, and end up outside the National Park, with the following risk of falling into traps of villagers or fields of Palm Oil Plantations. After the Orangutans start to leave, you will return again to the Klotok to go even further upstream. You will see how the coloration of the river changes and you will have the opportunity to see crocodiles and large monitor lizards, along with Gibbons and Proboscis Monkeys. And of course, enjoy lunch in the middle of this natural setting.

Arriving at Camp Leakey, the old orangutan research and rehabilitation center since 1971, when a student at UCLA Los Angeles named Birutte Galdikas began studying Orangutans there, the name Camp Leaky comes from Birutte’s own professor, Paleananthropologist Louis Leakey. At least 200 orangutans have already been cured and returned to the jungles thanks to this center, however since 1995, the Government of Indonesia has banned the introduction of more Orangutans in this camp, so the Orangutans are increasingly adapting to freedom. To this day, this camp is used as behavior research and feeding of Orangutans. At 14.00 you can see the feeding time of the Orangutans. You can also visit the small museum made by the scientist Dra. Birute Galdikas.

At the end of observing the orangutans in this camp and if time and conditions permit, we will make a gentle hike through the jungle back to the Boat to look for wild orangutans and other animals. On the way we will have the opportunity to know from our local guides, some of them born in the jungle, how to look for carnivorous animals or plants or simply, listen to their experience of life in the jungle. The jungles of Borneo, have given life and home to the inhabitants for millions of years, are jungles that under the eyes of the grandparents are able to give everything one needs. Food, water, medicine, yes… Never put anything in your mouth without the recommendation of your guide. In the afternoon, if it does not rain, the ship will dock near a congregation of fireflies and you can enjoy the spectacle of its luminescences.

DAY 5:GOA GAJAH - TAMPAKSIRING - GUNUNG KAWI SEBATU - TEGALALANG ▼

At the right time, we will pick you up at your hotel and start our route to Goa Gajah, the Elephant Cave. Goa Gajah is quoted in the lontar, (manuscript on palm leaf) Nagarakertagama of 1635 as a Balinese place called Lwa Gajah (Elephant Water or River), the abode of a Buddhist priest. The entrance is formed by a monstrous head with an open mouth and two hands that seem to open the entrance like a theater curtain. Around there are fantastic figures sculpted from leaves, animals, waves and humans fleeing scared from the mouth. In this same site both Hindu and Buddhist elements have been found. In fact, the cave can attest to an ancient precursor of Hindu and Buddhist symbology that, today, broadly defines the culture of Bali. Afterwards, we will purify ourselves in Tirta Empul,a legendary setting for a traditional story about good versus evil. The Tirta Empul spring feeds several purification baths, swimming pools and fish ponds surrounding the outer perimeter, flowing into the Tukad Pakerisan River. Just before this tour ends, we will visit Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple. It is one of the least visited temple complexes on the island of Bali, however, it is one of the most beautiful and peaceful. It features green gardens around ponds filled with blooming lotuses and carps, and ancient sanctuaries surrounded by crystal clear pools fed by natural springs. Finally before returning to our hotel in Ubud, we will stop at the famous rice terraces of Tegalalang where we will see the daily life of the locals and where you will find several swings to take pictures and take a precious memory of your time in Bali.

DAY 6:KEHEN TEMPLE - PANGLIPURAN VILLAGE - KINTAMANI

Our wonderful tour begins today at Kehen Temple. It is an ancient Hindu temple complex with unique architectural features. The steps extending from the ground to the courtyard and central hall of the temple are mythical figures of sandstone animals and Balinese folk statues. The walls of the temple are also adorned with Chinese porcelain dishes, which are a tribute to the historical relations between the local kingdom of Bali and China. Afterwards, we continue to Penglipuran, a village that managed to preserve its 75-hectare bamboo forest located in the northern part of the village. The members of this village have a strong commitment to the “ayahan desa” system, a philosophy committed to respecting the land on which the village is located. Then Panglipuran Village. We continue our march to reach Kintamani where we will enjoy the beautiful view of Danau Batur along with Gunung Batur in the background. Danau Batur is the largest lake in Bali that works as an irrigation source for all the farmers around it and the use for the entire Balinese society in general. Since 1800, Mount Batur has erupted more than 20 times and is still active till now. Mount Batur, with 1. 717 meters high, it is considered the female element, next to the male element of Mount Agung. We returned to the hotel to rest.

FAQ

What is the best time to do this tour?

Note: During the months of December to March, western winds blow in the Karimunjawa Archipelago, creating huge waves that causes many cancellations of the ships that cross to the islands. Although a storm can occur at any time of the year, we do not advise clients to travel to Karimunjawa during those months due to the recurrence of bad weather in that period.

Our favorite time to travel to Indonesia is between April and October, although it is an excellent destination all year round that offers memorable experiences for all kinds of adventures. July to August is high season. In western and central Indonesia, the climate is warm and is the most popular time among travelers to come on vacation, but if you prefer to travel from October to April, the eastern part of Indonesia, such as Banda and Raja Ampat, would be the best choice.

If you want to have a relaxing trip with fewer crowds, the months of April to June and september to October are ideal and a little cheaper. If you can only travel in “high season” but want to avoid the crowd, don’t worry because Indonesia still has many places little traveled by mass tourism.

How to get to Denpasar?

By Plane

The gateway to enter Bali on a flight route is via Ngurah Rai International Airport. International and domestic flights are available throughout the day, to bring you to the Island of the Gods.

Bali Airport closes once a year for 24 hours to commemorate the Balinese Nyepi or Silence Day ceremony. During this day no one can go out on the streets, or work and rest is given to all electronic products as well as cars, motorcycles, boats or planes. It’s a day of instrospection, leaving the whole island in absolute silence and darkness. Check with your travel agent for the date that corresponds to each year (changes according to the moon) and the conditions you have to follow if you are in Bali that day.

By land

You can enter Bali by land from Java. If this is your case, you have to prepare for a long road.

By sea

Bali is accessible by ferry from Lombok in western Nusa Tenggara and from the Gilis Islands. In Lombok, you can explore the beauty of Rinjani Volcano (if you’re on demanding trekking) and the pristine beaches of the Gili Islands and South Lombok.
From the island of Java, you can reach Bali by taking a ferry from Banyuwangi.

Difficulty

We have classified our tours into 3 different types of difficulty. Always check which one is right for your condition. If you have any questions, you can consult our travel expert.

Easy: Suitable for most people in good health. These trips can include short walks for days with around 2 to 3 hours on good roads and at low altitude.

Medium: A reasonable level of physical or technical condition is required, as these trips may require sustained resistance levels and travel may include longer days of approximately 5-6 hours of activity and/or higher altitudes as well as snorkeling in strong currents.

Hard: These trips are physically demanding and more suitable for people with a high level of endurance, good level of physical condition and regular exercise. The days can last about 7-8 hours of activity, often at high altitudes, in remote regions and sometimes without a nearby support vehicle. Travelers may need to carry their backpack or travel with trekking at night without access to normal bathrooms or accommodations.
