Discover more than just East Java volcanoes: turtle release at Sukamade village! Enjoy the vast sea of sand and spectacular sunrise views from the top of a majestic Bromo volcano. Climb the magnificent Ijen crater popular for its amazing views of blue fire. This extended version of Java volcanoes trip includes a visit to the less crowded village of Sukamade. In contrast to the top of mountains, we will take you down to the beach in Sukamade to take part in turtle release, bringing our little friends back in to the sea.

Itinerary: Natural wonders of Java

DAY 1: ARRIVAL SURABAYA – MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL – BROMO SKIRTS       ▼

Upon arrival in Surabaya Airport, we will pick you up using private transport and begin our journey by going to Madakaripura Waterfall, lies hidden at the end of a deep valley in the foothills of the Tengger mountain range. It is about 3 hours driving from Surabaya. On arrival, you will have about 20-minute trekking crossing rivers and rocky path. As the rumbling sounds of water grows louder, magnificent feature of water curtains covers the path that will not only please the eyes but also freshen your body through the down pour making getting wet quite inevitable. After the waterfall, we continue driving towards skirts of Bromo, to the accommodation near the volcano. Free time on arrival and make sure you have enough rest for early morning trekking.

NOTE: Arrival in Surabaya Airport must be no later than 11:00 AM to reach to reach Madakaripura Waterfall in time.

Day 2:BROMO SUNRISE TOUR – LUMAJANG       ▼

Very early, your guide and a jeep driver will be waiting for you at the hotel to attend one of the most spectacular sunrises in Indonesia. Even though you have to get up early, it will be worth it. You will climb to a high point first in full darkness and, little by little the first rays of sun are giving way to a huge and indescribable caldera that makes up the entire view of the Bromo and Semeru Natural Park. With Bromo, a volcano of great fumaroles and behind it, the Semeru Volcano with explosions every 20 minutes exactly, will make you have one of the most rewarding experiences ever. After enjoying the sunrise, by jeep, you will descend to the sea of sand. You can walk across the sand dune and go to Bromo volcano. After climbing some stairs you can reach the very edge of its crater and see the impressive activity it has. You return to the hotel to cool off and enjoy your breakfast.

At the appointed time, check out from the hotel and start driving towards the accommodation near Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. The journey should be about 4 hours including a stop on the way for having lunch at local restaurant and relax. Afternoon arrival at the hotel, enjoy your free time.

Day 3:EXPLORE TUMPAK SEWU WATERFALL – IJEN      ▼

At 7 AM after breakfast we will start walking to the infamous Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, dubbed the best one in Java, overshadowed by Semeru volcano in the background and surrounded by greeneries. Spend some time there admiring the beautiful landscapes, then we will go back around 11 AM and make our way towards the accommodation near Ijen volcano. The journey should be about 6-7 hours and you will have time for lunch at local restaurant.

Day 4:IJEN SUNRISE TOUR – DROPOFF AT YOUR HOTEL IN BALI       ▼

The day has finally come to visit one of the most attractive volcanoes in Indonesia! One of the last open pit sulfur mines that survive on the planet. Once you pick you up at your hotel, you will head towards the village of Licin to reach the slope of the volcano to begin the steep climb to the crater of the volcano. During this trek, your guide will give you double filter masks to protect you from the natural chemicals of sulfur.

At an altitude of 2883 meters and when dawn begins, an incredible contrast of colors will open before your eyes. A yellow earth scene and a large turquoise blue lake inside the crater that contrast with a suspended white cloud that is continuously expelling the volcano. In turn, among so much beauty you will see the local miners do what is said to be one of the toughest jobs in the world. These miners go down to the crater of the volcano to load 80 to 100 kilos of sulfur on their shoulders and then sell it. After this amazing experience on the edge of Ijen volcano crater, you will begin the descent with an incredible panoramic view of the mountains that make up the national park.

You will be taken you to your hotel to cool off and have breakfast and you will start the journey to Bali for about 5 hours at least, depending on where you stay in Bali. To do this, you will go first to the port of Banyuwangi where you will take the ferry to cross to Bali. It is a journey of only 30 minutes, but remember to adjust your watch by an hour due to the time zone change. Welcome to the island of the Gods. End of service.

Note: Ijen is closed on Friday of the first week of every month, and Blue Fire is not guaranteed.

FAQ

When is the best time of the year to do this tour?

Our favourite time for travel in Indonesia is between April to October. Although Indonesia is a great year-round destination, offering memorable experiences for all kinds of adventures. July to August are the peak summer months.

If you wish to have a relaxing journey in Indonesia with less crowds, the shoulder months of April to June and September to October are ideal and slightly more economic. If you must travel in ‘high season’ but want to avoid the crowd, worry not. There are numbered of unbeaten track in Indonesia ready to be explored.

How do I get to Surabaya?

Surabaya is served by domestic and international air routes. Many domestic routes use Surabaya airport as a transit point.

What should I bring?

Tropical areas are usually warm and often sweaty places, especially if you have Borneo or Sulawesi included in your travel. Check out our suggestions on What to Wear:

  • Comfortable and light shirt and at least a pair of long sleeves
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes if your trip include some trekking
  • Shorts and long pants

How hard is this tour?

We have classified our tours in 3 different classes. Always check which one suitable for your condition. If you have any doubt, you may consult to our travel expert.

Easy: Suitable for most people in good health. These trips can include short walk for days with around 2–3 hours in good paths and at low altitudes.

Medium: A reasonable level of fitness or technique is required, as these trips can require sustained endurance levels as the trip may include longer days of approximately 5-6 hours of activity or/and in higher altitudes, or snorkelling in strong current.

Hard: These trips are physically demanding and best suited for people with a high endurance level, good level of fitness and exercise regularly. Days can be long around 7-8 hours of activity, often at high altitudes, in remote regions and sometimes without a support vehicle nearby. Travellers may be required to carry their backpack, trip with trekking overnights without access to normal toilets or accommodations.
