Rote Island, another paradise found on earth! Legend said, this island got its name accidentally when a lost Portuguese sailor arrived and asked a farmer where he was. The surprised farmer, who could not speak Portuguese, introduced himself as “Rote“. 

With its incredible culture and people, marvelous beaches and magnificent land-spaces, Rote indeed has a special magic where you will find yourself lost in time.

DAY 1: WELCOME TO ROTE, THE OUTER ISLAND OF INDONESIA    ▼

Upon your arrival in Rote, we will head directly to our hotel. Refresh and set your eye for one of the most stunning sunset by the beach.

DAY 2:THE BAY OF MULUT SERIBU – VILLAGE OF HUNDIHOPO – PANTAI OESOSOLE    ▼

Breakfast at the hotel and get ready to explore the island of Rote. We will head to the North to take a boat to visit the bay of Mulut Seribu, which consists of 32 small islands which looks like labyrinth, with only one inhabited. The area also home to endemic birds.

Finishing the boat ride, we will visit a small village of Hundihopo where the local woman weave their traditional textile in group, and then we will head to the Beach of Oesosole. This white sandy beach is wellknown by couple for one of the rock shaped like heart.

DAY 3:PULAU NDAO : THE ISLAND OF WEAVERS AND FIRSHERMAN    ▼

Good morning! Today we will travel a little further outside the island of Rote. We will take a short ride by boat to the island of Ndao. Ndao is wellknown for many thing; the island of the weavers as well as fishing village. The local people also collecting nirah from the palm tree flowers for trade.

Arriving at the island, we will visit the village where the ladies are weaving their ikat as part of their daily activity and learn one of two stories from them. We will also visit the powdery white sand beaches and limestone bluffs, as well as the island next door, Pulau Do’o before going back to Rote.

DAY 4:EXPLORING WEST SOUTH ROTE: OESELI BEACH - THE LAGOON OF NIRWANA – SUNSET AT NEMBRALA BEACH    ▼

Fourth day of exploring the island of Rote, we will visit the Southern part of the island. The trip started with a visit to Oeseli Beach, a long white sandy beach with good waves that makes it one of the favorite beach of the surfer.

The tide is low, you can also see hundreds of colourful seastars. Around the beach you can also see livestock animals such as cows, goats, and pigs that make the village atmosphere comes alive. From the beach we will take a small boat to the lagoon on Nirwana, a well kept secret by the local.

On the low tide, the white sandy beach will surround the lagoon and makes it looked like a lake. In the afternoon we will head to Nembrala to enjoy the sunset.

DAY 5:THE CULTURE OF SASANDO AND THE HISTORY OF ROTE - KUPANG – OUT     ▼

We will spend the morning to visit the center of Rote, visiting the old building on a colonial style, which was used by the king of Rote. From here, we will visit the local market of Busalangga to see where the local normally trade.

In the market you may also find traditional food, snacks and spices of Rote, as well as handwoven colourful local textile. If time permited, we will also visit one of of cultural practitioner of NTT based in Rote, who still make and play Sasando, a traditional instrument made from palm leaves.

How do I get to Rote?

There are two option to get to Rote from Kupang, by boat and by airplane. Our tour package already has return air tickets Kupang – Rote – Kupang included. If you need assistance to book the air ticket from your any place in Indonesia to Kupang, do let us know. We will be happy to assist.

When is the best time to come to Rote?

Temperature in Rote island is vary depends on the season. It is most of the time humid and hot, as the other part of Indonesia. July and August would be the coolest months with steady breeze up to 25 degrees but not below.

Shoulder season between March/April and October/November normally warmer with less winds which makes these months are very ideal to visit Rote, especially if you are looking for beach vacation on a remote island.

How safe is Rote?

The people of Rote are very friendly, helpful, and they very much respect other’s believe. The criminal rate in the island is also considered very low considering it is a small closed community and the access to go in and out of the islands both by air and water are very well controlled by the authority.

On the geographical term, Rote is actually very strategic as it is located on the exact opposite location of where the Tsunami normally occurs. There is never been Tsunami in Rote and it is very unusual for this to happen to the island.

How do I get connected to the world?

You may get a SIM card by Indonesian phone provider Telkomsel or XL prior to depart to Rote, there is 4G all around the island.

Are there ATM machines and money changers on the island?

You may withdraw money from ATM machines in several banks without a problem, and a local bank offers money changer services. However, withdrawing cash in local currency before arrival to the island would be recommended to avoid trouble in case machines or money change do not work properly. Yes, bring cash.

What to bring to Rote?

Pack your bag lightly yet classy, as you will be (most of the time) in a remote tropical beaches. Swimsuit, thongs, sunglasses and sunscreen are must, but you may want to our ultimate packing list for Rote:

  • light shirt and light shorts/long pants
  • light sweatshirt for the cooler nights and boat trip
  • walking shoes for excursions
  • good pair of sandals
  • hat or scarf to cover your head from Rote’s sun
  • books for lazy afternoons while waiting for sunset
  • camera (or phone with good camera will do)
  • medical and travel insurance
  • rash guard
  • bring your own food if you special diet as Rote have limited sources
  • ear plugs, if you are a light sleeper
  • mosquito spray
  • if you come to surf, bring along your boards, wax, fin keys, extra leg-rope

Can I rent surfboard and learn surf in Rote?

If you do not feel like bringing your own board, there is a surfboard rental service in Nemberala, alternatively you can also get the boards from various surf instructors around the island.

Is there any nightlife in Rote?

Plenty! Though it’s not the kind of clubs and partying 🙂

You can go for a beach-walk or take a dip in the sea with the view of thousand stars.

Are there mosquitoes?

Rote is considered to have a low rainfall, consequently there are also few mosquitos on the island, although if you traveling on rainy season this may not be the case. But this is common case in a tropical area, so simply make sure to have a good mosquito repellent with you and get any protection need on dusk, when the mosquitos are normally out.
