DAY 1: ARRIVAL TMC AIRPORT – NIHI RESORT     ▼

Welcome to Tambolaka! Upon arrival at the airport of Tambolaka in Waitabula, meet and greet with your driver and guide. Then you will go to your hotel in West Sumba. Along the way, you may enjoy the scenery of the island, the traditional houses, and the activities of the locals. Arrive at your resort, check – in and free at your leisure. Lunch and dinner at Resort.

DAY 2:LAPOPU WATERFALL – PRAIJING VILLAGE – WATUBELLA BEACH       ▼

After an ordinary breakfast, you will visit the beautiful waterfall on the island, Lapopu Waterfall. After a drive through the endless hilly and green landscape of Sumba, you will arrive near the waterfall. To visit the waterfall, you will need to do a small hike of approximately 15 minutes and cross a bamboo bridge to get there. There is a nice spot to sit down where you can watch the water find its way down the hill. Next, you go to the village of Praijing. Praijing village is a traditional village uphill, surrounded by lots of greenery. This is one of the few villages where you can actually have a beautiful overview of the entire village and get an idea of how the village is conducted. Take some time to walk around the village; the elders occupy most of the houses, and kids are always around to share their smiles. Back to the resort for lunch. After lunch, you can continue your trip to visit Lamboya Hill and Watubela Beach. Or end the trip if you want to relax at the resort.

DAY 3:WAIKELO SAWAH & WAIKACURE RICEFIELD TREKKING – LOCAL MARKET       ▼

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up and take you to Waikelo Sawah to do trekking along the beautiful rice field view of Sumba Island. During the trek, locals may be found doing farmer activities, and there is a natural spring of water in the cave, a beautiful view of the river, and a small waterfall at the end of the trek. The next visit will be to the local market, where you can engage with the locals and see that they sell their local products directly. Try to connect with them with our guide assistance!

FAQ

When is the best time of the year to do this tour?

Our favourite time for travel in Indonesia is between April to October. Although Indonesia is a great year-round destination, offering memorable experiences for all kinds of adventures. July to August are the peak summer months.

If you wish to have a relaxing journey in Indonesia with less crowds, the shoulder months of April to June and September to October are ideal and slightly more economic. If you must travel in ‘high season’ but want to avoid the crowd, worry not. There are numbered of unbeaten track in Indonesia ready to be explored.

How do I get to Sumba?

There are two airports on the island of Sumba, one in East Sumba and the other in Southwest Sumba. The airport is East Sumba is Umbu Mehang Kunda. It was previously known as Mau Hau and is located in the town of Waingapu. The airport in Southwest Sumba is called Tambolaka.

Direct flight to Sumba is only available from two cities, Denpasar (Bali) and Kupang (Timor). If you want to visit Sumba from anywhere else in Indonesia you will have to transit through one of these two cities first.

A number of airlines fly to Sumba, including Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, and Sriwijaya Air. If you want to fly with Garuda Indonesia then you will need to fly to Tambolaka Airport like on this specific trip.

What should I bring?

Tropical areas are usually warm and often sweaty places, especially if you have Borneo or Sulawesi included in your travel. Check out our suggestions on What to Wear:

  • Comfortable and light shirt and at least a pair of long sleeves
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes if your trip include some trekking
  • Shorts and long pants
  • Couple of pairs of socks
  • Waterproof Jacket/Raincoat

How hard is this tour?

Easy: Suitable for most people in good health. These trips can include short walk for days with around 2–3 hours in good paths and at low altitudes.
