Traditional Indonesian Drink: GURAKA WATER

Originally from the island of Halmahera (Moluccas), Air Guraka is a traditional Indonesian drink. Guraka water uses nuts as one of the main ingredients. In addition, ingredients such as ginger and palm sugar complement this drink. As a whole, they make Guraka water have a characteristic fragrant aroma and a sweet, tropical taste.


Recipe: Air Guraka or Guraka Water


When we talk about different islands and cities in Indonesia, it is also talking about different dishes and traditional drinks. Drinks and meals that are sought after by travelers for their curiosity in trying new flavors. For those traveling to Ternate and Halmahera, around the Northern Moluccas region, don’t forget to try Guraka water!

In the areas mentioned above, this drink is easily found at street food stalls. With prices from around Rp. 5,000.

☕ Guraka Water: Ingredients

  • A piece of white ginger (about 5 cm)
  • 500 grams palm sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 lemongrass, crushed
  • 50g peeled, toasted and chopped walnuts/peanuts
  • 750ml water

👨🏼 🍳 Guraka Water: Steps to make

1. Clean the ginger and crush.

2. Place ginger, palm sugar, granulated sugar and water into a casserole.

3. Cook until boiling.

4. Insert 1 stalk of crushed lemongrass. Simmer for a while.

5. Turn off the heat and pour into serving cups.

👉 Finally, add the toasted nuts or peanuts and enjoy this hot drink.
