Enjoy off-beaten birding trip in Sulawesi! Being biologically rich, Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park is one of the most important conservation areas in the Wallacea region. In this 6-day tour, we will take you to explore the vast forest to look for various species of bird that inhabit the Park: 155 species have been recorded, of which 32 are endangered and 37 are endemic. The recorded bird species include the maleo fowl, Sulawesi black pigeon and Nicobar pigeon. In addition, there are over five hundred recorded species of flora, eleven species of reptiles and over twenty species of fish and mammals that you can encounter on the way. Enjoy your adventure!

Itinerary: Sulawesi Birding Trip

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN KENDARI      ▼

Welcome to the city of Kendari! The starting point of our Sulawesi birding trip. Upon arrival at the Haluoleo airport Kendari, meeting service then transfer directly to your hotel in town. Dinner served at the local restaurant and stay overnight at the hotel in Kendari.

DAY 2:KENDARI - RAWA AOPA WATUMOHAI NATIONAL PARK      ▼

After breakfast, you will be transferred immediately to the Rawa Aopa. We will be canoeing to the Rawa Aopa resort located in the middle of the swamp area. From here you will start to explore the secret of this swamp. Rawa Aopa is a dark fresh water swamp. It’s the home for many kind and rare tropical bird species and one of the largest protected swamp in Sulawesi island. Late in the afternoon we drive to Unaaha for dinner and stay overnight.

DAY 3:BIRDING BY CANOE IN KONAWE - EHA RIVER       ▼

Early leaving the hotel in Unaaha for morning birding along the Konaweeha watershed by motorized wooden canoe. Have a breakfast on boards. Continue for observing the birds till afternoon. Take a little walk along the village around Ambekaeri. Aftewards, continue by 4WD to go back to Unaaha. Dinner and overnight in at the hotel.

DAY 4:EXPLORING NORTHERN AREA      ▼

Early in the morning we depart for Meluhu village observing birds along the way. Continue to Wonggeduku area. The wild duck, king fisher, booboo and other tropical species can be easily spotted within this area. Late in afternoon we drive back to Kendari. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 5:KENDARI - KOLONO - KENDARI     ▼

Leaving Kendari early in the morning to Kolono. Upon arrival in Kolono we take a boat to cross the bay to visit Tanjung Peropa preservation area famous as a home for the Maleo birds and many others wildlife. Picnic lunch served during tour. Late in the afternoon we drive back to Kendari. Dinner and stay overnight.

FAQ

When is the best time of the year to do this tour?

Our favourite time for travel in Indonesia is between April to October, although Indonesia is a great year-round destination, offering memorable experiences for all kinds of adventures. July to August are the peak summer months.

In West to Central part of the weather is delightfully warm and it’s a popular time for travellers to visit for holidays, whilst if you wish to travel from October to April, the Eastern part Indonesia, like Banda and Raja Ampat, would be the best option.

If you wish to have a relaxing journey in Indonesia with less crowds, the shoulder months of April to June and September to October are ideal and slightly more economic. If you must travel in ‘high season’ but want to avoid the crowd, worry not, there are numbered of unbeaten track in Indonesia ready to be explored.

How do I get to Kendari?

Currently, local direct flights to Kendari (SUB) are available from Jakarta airport (CGK). From Denpasar, Bali (DPS), the flights normally have one transit in Makassar (UPG) or Surabaya (SUB). Jakarta and Denpasar are where most international routes arrive and depart. 

What should I bring?

Tropical areas are usually warm and often sweaty places, especially if you have Borneo or Sulawesi included in your travel. Check out our suggestions on What to Wear:

  • Comfortable and light shirt and at least a pair of long sleeves
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes if your trip include some trekking
  • Shorts and long pants
  • Couple of pairs of socks
  • Waterproof Jacket/Raincoat

How hard is this tour?

We have classified our tours in 3 different classes. Always check which one suitable for your condition. If you have any doubt, you may consult to our travel expert.

Easy: Suitable for most people in good health. These trips can include short walk for days with around 2–3 hours in good paths and at low altitudes.

Medium: A reasonable level of fitness or technique is required, as these trips can require sustained endurance levels as the trip may include longer days of approximately 5-6 hours of activity or/and in higher altitudes, or snorkelling in strong current.

Hard: These trips are physically demanding and best suited for people with a high endurance level, good level of fitness and exercise regularly. Days can be long around 7-8 hours of activity, often at high altitudes, in remote regions and sometimes without a support vehicle nearby. Travellers may be required to carry their backpack, trip with trekking overnights without access to normal toilets or accommodations.
